Environmental Policy

Sustainability and Sustainable Business Practices
This Environmental Policy outlines our commitment to pursuing environmentally sustainable business practices. We have developed this policy to guide our environmental initiatives because we believe that it is the right thing to do and, as an organisation that works with other organisations to improve their environmental performance, it is important that we ‘walk the talk’.

Objectives

The objectives of our Environmental Policy are to:
  • Reduce operational impacts from travel, printing, energy and water use, waste production, and (as an overarching issue) procurement.
  • Contribute to wider environmental outcomes by reducing the environmental impact of organisations and industries with whom we work. We aim to pursue these outcomes through advocacy and by sharing our expertise with these groups.
  • Communicate our environmental progress so that we are accountable for our actions and to (hopefully!) set a positive example to other businesses.

Goals

Below are the goals of our Environmental Policy.

Goal 1: Investigate and implement waste minimisation practices.
  • Introduced recycling of cardboard and other recyclable waste, in cooperation with our cleaners.
  • Begun recycling printer cartridges in cooperation with our supplier, Canon.
Goal 2: Monitor travel by Angus & Associates staff.  Pursue opportunities to reduce (carbon emissions from) business-related travel.
  • Successfully monitored all business-related travel and avoided emitting nearly one ton of carbon-equivalent green house gas (outlined in more detail below).

Goal 3: Continue encouraging environmental outcomes through advice and advocacy.
  • Conducted stakeholder consultation and provided recommendations to Convention and Incentives New Zealand’s (CINZ) ‘Sustainable Action Group’.

Goal 4: Continue communicating our environmental performance.
  • Updated Environmental Policy and posted on website.
  • Undertook Sustainable Business Network’s 'Get Sust Online' sustainability self-audit and made available on our website.

Sustainable procurement

Our policy on suppliers is to check all suppliers for environmental accreditation or policy. If suppliers do not demonstrate sufficient environmental credentials, we will explore alternatives and, all other things being equal, change supplier. We will also consider paying a premium for more environmentally responsible suppliers on a case by case basis.

Encouraging environmental outcomes through advice and advocacy

Since the establishment of our Environmental Policy, Angus & Associates staff have:
  • Written for two publications (Tourism Business and Meeting Newz) concerning environmental practices among tourism and events organisations respectively. The Meeting Newz article calls for an industry-wide approach to environmental sustainability.
  • A staff member prepared and presented a seminar throughout New Zealand to the New Zealand Association of Events Professionals (NZAEP) Seminar Series titled: Environmentally Sustainable Events.
  • Contributed consulting advice to Convention and Incentives New Zealand (CINZ) Sustainability Action Group (SAG), conducting stakeholder consultation and preparing recommendations that fed into recommendations to the CINZ board regarding the incorporation of sustainability principles and accreditation as a condition of membership.
