Events and Evaluations

Understand performance, amplify impact

We are experts in economic impact modelling, identifying and quantifying the benefits of your event, your local or national entity, or your industry. We have undertaken formal reviews and other post-event evaluations for dozens of clients, including World of Wearable Art (WOW®), Winter Games NZ, The Hobbit Movie Premiere and arts festival Cupa Dupa.

Here are a couple of examples of our evaluation work. One is an assessment of whether a new initiative had met its objectives, the other supporting continuous improvement in an event over two decades.

Trail Pricing on Trial

New Zealand’s Great Walks – a network of multi-day trails through some of the country’s most outstanding landscapes – attract thousands of international and local hikers during the walking season.

The Department of Conservation (DOC), which manages the Great Walks, commissioned Angus & Associates to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the effectiveness of a Differential Pricing Trial on the track network. The trial took place over the 2018/19 and 2019/20 Great Walks seasons.

The wide-ranging and multi-faceted evaluation involved determining whether and to what extent the pricing trial objectives were met. Our analysis, which assessed visitor decision-making, satisfaction, and perceptions of value for Great Walk experiences, included an online survey of 5,000-plus walkers, a concessionaire and stakeholder survey, social media monitoring, review and analysis of DOC operational and secondary data.

TRENZ: Insights for the Tourism Industry

TRENZ (previously Tourism Rendezvous New Zealand) is New Zealand’s largest B2B travel trade event, attracting thousands of international and domestic delegates, industry leaders and government representatives to network and do business.

For almost 20 years, Angus & Associates has partnered Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) to provide valuable and actionable insights for the TRENZ event.

Our tailored approach developed the ‘Mood of the Delegates’ survey, which provides on-site, real-time feedback with a post-event survey gathering deeper insights. Supporting this evaluation, we also calculate the event’s economic impact for the hosting region.

Our partnership has seen TRENZ go from strength to strength, achieving high satisfaction annually, including recognition as a finalist for ‘Best Business Event’ at the 2018 New Zealand Business Awards.

Te Matatini: Event Evaluation

The biennial Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival is New Zealand’s largest Māori cultural event – a celebration of the Māori performing arts, bringing together teams of passionate performers competing for the title of the country’s best kapa haka exponents.

Since 2011, Angus & Associates has undertaken the event evaluation on behalf of the Te Matatini Society Inc. Our approach provides visitor profiles, measures key performance metrics and delivers recommendations for the ongoing development of the festival. We design our surveys to enable direct comparison with previous festivals and accurate forecasting of impact for future events.

Holiday Parks NZ: Informing Advocacy

New Zealand’s extensive and developed holiday park network is a popular accommodation choice for domestic and international travellers visiting the country’s most beautiful and spectacular landscapes. This important sector provides 36% of New Zealand’s commercial accommodation.

Through our partnership with Holiday Parks New Zealand, Angus & Associates has delivered a much needed perspective on the value of holiday parks to their local communities. Regularly updated over a number of years, this has involved evaluating detailed expenditure data from a range of holiday parks and surveying guests to understand their expenditure profile. Holiday Parks NZ leverages this information to advocate for the sector.
